JW ANDERSON: internship photo diary

I recently joined JW Anderson for two weeks as a studio intern. I threw myself in at the deep end and started the week before fashion week and stayed till the end of fashion week. I'd read some reviews people had written on their time there prior to starting, so i expected ridiculously long hours and hard work (but what do you expect from fashion!?!?)

A couple of days into the placement, situated in Dalston, I got used to the long hours and being on your feet and busy the whole time!! The week before fashion week was pretty crazy, as to be expected, and it involved a lot of running around London on errands; this was everything from heading down to Berwick Street to source fabric samples and/or buy fabrics; picking up parcels to be collected from various locations; taking toiled/samples/patterns to factories to be made; taking personal orders to people (one of which i delivered to Peter Pilotto!); responding to requests from PR companies by finding the requested outfits and running it over to them in order to be used for editorial and various other things. Although some people didn't like running errands, i quite liked them as i got to see all the places that are connected to the designer and how the business works and where all these places are. My oyster card certainly got a beating and i'm definitely a pro on public transport in London.

Obviously the week before fashion week mainly involved getting the collection completed for the show, to which i did some pattern cutting and hand sewing for. I'm not a big fan of the technical side of things but i liked to be involved in the collection and didn't mind doing the pattern cutting and sewing! As everything was focusing on the fast approaching fashion week, there was still the 'production' side of things to be done. This is where the current season garments are labelled, folded, and packed and then sent to various stores all around the world. It was interesting to see all the different stores that stocked JW Anderson, from America, to Germany, to Korea to everywhere else.

All the other interns and I were dressers at the London Fashion Week show. The show was to be held at the Topshop Showspace which was situated at Tate Modern this year. We met everyone at Tate Modern, acquired our passes and then unloaded the truck (glamorous) and prepped the rails ensuring everything was in order, hung and steamed with the right shoes ready to go! We were all assigned a model and had to get them dressed ready for the show. The show was a success and it was such an exciting environment to be in.

After the show, the following week was really quiet in the studio. We had a day off the day after, in which i took the chance to visit one of my favourite galleries - the saatchi- and had a wonder down Kings Road.

I really loved my time at JW Anderson, the other interns really made the experience and i met some amazing people from all around the world! It was such a tough, hard working experience but very worth it. I'm going back to help out in June at the menswear show and i can't wait.

  1. Wow, it would've been such an amazing and unique experience to be an intern for LFW! Then again, maybe it's cause I come from tiny little Perth in Australia where there's not as big of a fashion scene like in the UK/ Europe. I loved reading your adventures! I think errand running for people would be fun actually, always being on a mission and like being an integral part for everything going well!

ps thanks for your comment cause it led me to your awesome blog! :) x
